We are pleased to share an experience from Dr Karthika Prasad, one of our iLAuNCH Trailblazer team project leads and it's great to see what can be kick-started through the iLAuNCH fast track initiative. Dr Karthika Prasad recently had the opportunity to visit CHEMZEST Group of Companies in India, a company specialising in silicone materials for space applications and a supplier to ISRO.

InSpace Director Professor Anna Moore Chairs SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation 2026 Symposium
From inspirational plenary sessions to packed talks and poster sessions, it has been wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm across the meeting. Particularly exciting was welcoming over 1,000 first-time attendees among the nearly 3,000 participants. I’ve been attending this biennial conference since 1998 in Kona, Hawaii, and it continues to go from strength to strength.

OzFuel payload demonstration for SmartSat CRC project
A major milestone was reached this week for our SmartSat CRC project with the demonstration of the OzFuel payload, a space-based sensor platform that will assist with bushfire prevention, detection, mitigation and resilience.

ANU QOGS group win Research Team of the Year at AusSpace Awards
Professor Francis Bennet and his team, Doris Grosse, Ian Price, Michael Copeland, Elisa Jager and ANU Institute for Space | InSpace's Kate Ferguson, won for Research Team of the Year, for their groundbreaking work with optical communications at ANU and the Mt Stromlo Quantum Optical Ground Station.

ANU QOGS received the highest possible data rate supported by Orion’s optical terminal at 260 Mbps
On April 1 the Orion spacecraft launched on top of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket to orbit the moon as part of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Artemis II mission.

What a phenomenal ten days it has been following Artemis II's journey, with the crew travelling further than any human has ever travelled, just incredible.

We're received video from Artemis II via optical communications!
The optical communications system on Artemis II is performing exceptionally well and proving its utility with over 100Gb of data downlinked so far including high resolution imagery and video! NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration - is now looking to increase the data rate to 100Mbps to allow as much data as possible to be relayed back during the mission. This system highlights the benefit of optical communications for future missions to the moon and beyond as operations become more complex.
