The commercial space race is on…but can Australia stake its claim in the new space economy?
Yes, absolutely. And at the Canberra Innovation Network First Wednesday Connect May Pitch Session, held last week at ANU Research School of Physics, ANU Institute for Space | InSpace Associate Director, Strategic Projects, Dr Kate Ferguson, explained how:
Space based technologies are critical to Australia's economy and security. Already, essential functions such as communications, navigation and weather tracking are enabled in space.
Over the last decade, the cost of access to space has continued to reduce, and this is poised to have a major impact on sectors such as pharmaceuticals and semiconductors that can benefit through manufacturing in the microgravity of space, with things like breakthrough designs, next-gen products and decreased time to market.
Australia is perfectly positioned to capitalise on these growth areas. We've already seen the first commercial returns from space to a spaceport in South Australia this year, and what's coming next with the ANU-led Future of Space CRC will be transformative. By bringing together stakeholders across industry, research, government and communities, we're accelerating Australia towards a sustainable space returns economy at scale with innovative technologies, policy frameworks and First Nations knowledge.
